Power supplies labeled as 500 watt, when they
are actually only 250 watts.

Remember that these are peak wattages. (when
the system first starts)
Even under full load, actual consumption is
usually less than these figures.
Calculate
the power output of your PSU
Find
a label on the side of the Power Supply Unit.
Just
because you see eg 500WATT on the label, if
your serious about your system, do the maths.
Open the computer case and a sticker similar
to the details below will be found.

watts output

* v = volts & A = amps
There
are ways to tell if a power supply is labeled
correctly,
1)
Check the amperage on the +12V rail, a good
power supply will have a beefy +12V rail
(18 Amps or higher), or even dual +12V rails,
as Antec does with their TruePower series.
To
start PSU without a motherboard connected.
Short
PIN 14 (Power supply on) and any GND PIN - (ground)
