IDE channels
|
Connect devices with the same ATA speed to the same IDE port. 20Gb hard drives and larger have ATA100 bus while CD ROMs only have ATA33. Using a HDD and the CD ROM on the same cable slows the hard drive down. | |

Partitions
|
For those using FAT32 with (Win 98,ME & XP), smaller partitions gains speed in access and frees more space due to smaller cluster sizes. Choose up to 8Gb for each partition.If you are using Windows XP NTFS partitions, this wont be necessary. | |

Swap files
|
Create a partition
for your swap file and you will never have to defrag the file. Make the swap file 1.5x - 2 TIMES as large as the RAM . |

| Got a second hard drive (eg D:) then make
the swap file on the second drive. Windows can read and write to two different drives. |

WINDOWS 98 Scandisk
/ Defrag should be run in SAFE MODE to work effectively. Restart computer and when after the POST test finishes (screen is black with white characters in a box) Use the F8 key and few times (don't worry if the computer makes a beeping sound) means keyboard buffer is full.Black screen with Windows boot options will appear. Select SAFE MODEClick on the Desktop icon "My Computer" Right Mouse click on "(C:)" , select PROPERTIES then TOOLS Once finished restart computer |
